Ode to a Lime

One year ago today I found out I was pregnant. Some months later I wrote this poem to share with the Bean (or lime, as that was her size at the time of this writing).

ODE TO A LIME

IT WAS THE DAY OF BIRTH FOR OUR NATION
AND THE MIDDLE OF MY SUMMER VACATION.
I HAD BEEN WONDERING FOR A WEEK OR SO
AND WITH FINGERS CROSSED I GAVE IT A GO.

A GALLON OF WATER DOWN THE HATCH
WOULD THE PLUS SIGNS REALLY MATCH?
I HELD MY BREATH AND WATCHED THE CLOCK
TRYING TO PREPARE MYSELF FOR ANY SHOCK

WAIT! I THINK I SEE…..
OH, COULD IT BE?
IS THAT A PLUS? A LINE? A DOT?
NO, THAT’S DEFINITELY MORE THAN JUST A SPOT.

A PLUS! A CROSS! WHO CARES I YELLED!
AS THE JOY IN MY HEART BEGAN TO SWELL.
A MOM TO BE, I SMILED BRIGHTLY
MY HOPES AND PRAYERS ANSWERED RIGHTLY.

I CALLED YOUR DAD AND COULD HEAR HIS SMILE
EVEN THOUGH WE WERE SEPARATED BY MILES
MOMMY, DADDY, AND BABY MAKES THREE
JUST LIKE THAT, A HAPPY FAMILY.

SO NOW WE WAIT, PASSING THE TIME
DREAMING OF FRUIT AND MEASURING LIMES
TO MEET YOU AND GREET YOU AND SEE YOUR SWEET FACE
FILLING OUR HEARTS WITH LOVE AND WITH GRACE.
